It was a bright, sunny summer day on the Frontier. Birds flew to-and-fro picking up any seeds of wheat or corn that the farmers dropped while tending their gardens. Livestock grazed lazily in the shade of their corrals and farm hands went about their daily duties.

Shay sat on the porch of his manor just taking in the scenery before him. Days like these were ones to cherish, what with his constant duties to the Order. It was relaxing to have a day away from the drama and conflict of the secret war between the Assassins and Templars.

Deciding to do something with his day Shay stood and stretched before entering the manor. He walked into the kitchen and began gathering ingredients to make lunch. Bread, meat and lettuce with a light mustard sauce were assembled for a sandwich. Carrots, radishes and sprouts were wrapped in a napkin and set astride the sandwich makings. Each were then placed carefully into a wicker basket and covered with a blanket.

Shay carefully hooked his arm through the handle of the basket and walk back outside. In the yard, tending to a newly assembled vegetable garden, Hare Connor was hard at work planting pumpkin seeds. It was a small project Shay had put together for Connor so he would have something to do while the Templar was gone on business. Not to mention the added benefit of not having to purchase vegetables from the market, which usually were expensive. The hare had taken to the project with utmost enthusiasm and was a strikingly competent gardener. There were methods the hare used that Shay never even considered. It was quite ingenious.

"Connor," Shay called, walking over to the garden.

The hare perked up, looking over to where Shay approached him. He smiled and gave the Templar a big hug.

"I was thinking we could go on a picnic," Shay explained, embracing the smaller form, "I know a great place we can go."

Connor nodded excitedly before quickly retreating into the manner to change into different clothes. Once Connor returned the two walked hand-in-hand down the road and off into the forest. The place where Shay wanted to take the hare was beautiful sunny grove tucked away on the banks of the river that ran just south of the house. Wild flowers and butterflies painted the grove in colors. The water was crystal clear and if one was patient enough they could see the fish swim from rocky outcrop to fallen log.

Shay and Hare Connor carefully made their way into the grove and situated themselves in the shade of a big apple tree. The branches were littered with small pink blossoms, promising an abundant harvest. The picnic blanket was spread out on the grassy clearing and the food set out on plates and in bowls. The couple sat quietly in the shade and happily ate their lunch.

Just to tease the young hare Shay stole one of Connor's carrots and threatened to devour it. The hare frowned and went to take his carrot back but Shay held it out of his reach.

"You have to take it away from me," Shay explained, sticking the carrot partially in his mouth.

"And not with your hands," he added.

Connor huffed in frustration, blushing at the Templar's implication but wrestled the Templar for his carrot. Shay chuckled as the hare grabbed his wrist and tried to pin them to the ground. The Templar did not make it easy for Connor and soon the hare was straddling Shay's lap and trying to snatch the carrot away with his mouth.

After a good few minutes Connor managed to snatch part of the carrot away and gobble it down. Shay fell back on the grass laughing. He quickly consumed his half of the carrot before pulling Connor down to lay next to him. He felt Connor tense when he wrapped his arm around the hare's waist to pull him close but that uncertainty melted away. Shay gently stroked one of Connor's furry ears as he gazed down at the smaller form nestled against him.

He pressed a small kiss to the hare's forehead.

"I am glad to be in your company," he whispered to Connor.

The hare stared up at him, cheeks slightly flushed. In response the little hare nestled closer to Shay and closed his eyes. Shay smiled and turned his gaze up the the sky.

It was going to be a wonderful afternoon.
